In the eyes of many, the prospect of a normal woman marrying a prince and becoming a princess is the ultimate fairytale.
So of course, American actress Meghan Markle’s newly announced engagement to Prince Harry has been met with much excitement.
Many Americans are delighting over the fact that Markle is set to become a princess.
Today finally came that day but another American on the wedding steal the show!
American Bishop Michael Curry has captured the world’s attention with a long and powerful address at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Bishop Curry, from Chicago, spoke passionately about the power of love, quoting Dr Martin Luther King.
“There’s power in love, don’t underestimate it,” he said.
The Most Reverend Michael Curry became the first black presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church – like the Church of England, part of the Anglican Communion – when he was appointed in 2015.
The colourful speech, replete with historical references, had churchgoers, including David Beckham and Camilla Parker Bowles, smiling.
The bride and groom sat near the preacher and held hands as they watched him speak.
The Bishop’s presence is significant for a bunch of reasons … notably, an American took to the pulpit at a Royal Wedding. Bishop Curry is the head of the Episcopal Church in Chicago. Also, not lost is the fact he’s African American, as is Meghan. It’s especially poignant given what happened several months ago, when Princess Michael of Kent wore a racist “blackamoor” broach when she met Meghan.
Meghan, holding hands with Prince Harry, smiled as she listened to Curry talk about how: ‘Two young people fell in love, and we showed up.’
Rev. Curry even mentioned slavery in his wedding speech.
‘I’m talking about some power, real power, power to change the world,’ he said of the ‘power of love.’
I personally didn’t like his speech but it was interesting to see that American steal the show on the Royal wedding!
