Polls Are Closed! Here Are The First Live Results in the Alabama Senate Special Election! The Results Are Surprising!

Who voted in Alabama and why? We’re breaking down exit polls from the special election between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones for its open US Senate seat.

Today Alabama Voters will decide whether to send Republican Roy Moore or Democrat Doug Jones to the Senate in the race to fill the seat previously held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Polls in the closely-watched, and surprisingly competitive, race close at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Alabama is a deeply conservative state. But Moore’s campaign is embroiled in controversy and allegations of past sexual misconduct, creating an opening for a possible upset by Jones. Moore has a lead of 2.2 points in polling averages, but polls have been all over the place and the race could go either way.

About 57,000 votes have been counted already. Mr. Moore leads in that count by 3.4 points.

We think about 1.3 million votes remain to be counted. We think Mr. Moore leads in that vote by less than one point.

Our estimates are based on the results reported so far, the results of previous elections and demographic data. Unlike reported results, they attempt to account for precincts that have not yet reported their votes.

Latest results show that Roy Moore leads by 8 percentage points over Doug Jones with 26 percent of precincts fully reporting.
