Representative Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, took the House floor at 10:04 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, intent on speaking about the young undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers.
Eight hours and seven minutes later, she quit talking.
Her marathon monologue — highly unusual for the House, which has no equivalent to the Senate filibuster — appears to have set the record for the longest continuous speech in the chamber, dating to at least 1909, according to the House historian. It tied up the House into the evening, delaying debate on a bill intended to spur competition in the mortgage market.
But the House floor gambit appears to have done little to quell concerns from the liberal base and rank-and-file members.
“If I said something on the floor for eight hours and then didn’t do something about it, well, the speech is nice,” Illinois Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez said after Pelosi’s Wednesday speech, which she hoped would pressure House Speaker Paul Ryan to allow a full-fledged vote to protect young illegal immigrants known as “dreamers.”
Also, American citizens seem to disagree with her speech!
Laura Wilkerson, the mother of a child slain by an illegal immigrant, said she wishes House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi would do a “shut-up-a-thon.”
Wilkerson, whose son was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant in 2010, slammed Pelosi for putting illegal immigrants ahead of American citizens.
Wilkerson son’s Josh gave an illegal immigrant classmate a ride home from school one day, and in return, the immigrant tortured Josh, strangled him, beat him to death, and set his body on fire.
“You know, Nancy Pelosi’s talk-a-thon, I think I can speak for all angel parents that say, you know, we wish you would do a shut-up-a-thon,” Wilkerson said on Fox News. “You know, she just wasted her time, everybody’s time yesterday. She doesn’t seem to get it.”
“Why do you need to offer people sanctuary form the law? And you don’t know about it until it lands in your lap,” she asserted. “Nobody gets sanctuary from the law in this town, I don’t care what color you are or where you’re from.”
Do you agree with this brave American woman?
